Wonder if anyone can help me with a diagnosis or advice on what started off as a pleasant Sunday morning and now looks a bit concerning!!!

The problem is with my 1991 Disco 200tdi. It started with it being tempermental when starting but didn´t seem or sound like a starter problem, it was intermittent and when it did start, lots of greyish/blueish smoke came from the exhaust. (def more grey than blue). Losing water, overheating quickly (never got into the red) and lots of pressure in the coolant resevoir.

I came to the conclusion the cylinder head gasket was gone, so got all the parts and set out this morning removing the head. I have a reasonable amount of (amatuer) experience working on cars but never had to do a head gasket. I got it off with little problem and it wouldn´t have taken a genius to work out something was wrong in and around cylinder 3.

This link to my flickr account will show you photos of what is concerning me.

The gasket looks fine.
The valve has brown gunky rust deposits.
The cylinder has a lot of this brown gunky stuff in it.

Does this suggests that water is getting into this cylinder?
The head gasket looks fine so I am now at a loss as to what has happened and what to do next.

Any advice would be appreciated but first a little history on the car. The head gasket was done around 2 years ago 25,000KM but not sure if right gasket was put on, and head bolts not tightened again (shouldn´t this be done after so many KM). I ran the car on SVO for around 4 months in a hot climate.

Thanks in advance

If the gasket is fine it could be a cracked head. You should ideally get it pressure tested. The head bolts are tightened in a specific sequence and should be done to 40Nm followed by 60° + 60°. They must not be retorqued afterwards.

i've got the head off my 200tdi at the moment as the head gasket failed, mine was presurising the cooling system causing it to blow the water out of the expansinon tank cap, luckily it happened just as i was parking up so it didn't overheat.Yours looks like it been burning the water off on the rusty cylinder
