The easy way is to use seafoam , redex or ATF poured down the carb and in the cylinders afterwards. Change plugs and hope the carbon wasn't holding your piston rings together :D
Or just take the head off and use the rhino pubes drill or die grinder attachments to clean it off.

Cheers Ive got the gasket set on order, and found the past and sucker thing locally which was a miricle! Decided to do it myself so I can learn about my Land Rover as I tackle each job.
good for you ,you might find it easier to thin paste once on the valve with a little turps or petrol etc just drip on

If you do grind in the valves remember - don't just spin them in place round and round. Back and forth, lift, reposition a quarter-turn or so and then back and forth again. This gives a much better grind and also lets the valve grinding compound redistribute for easier results.

Also, make very sure you clean off all of the compound when you're done - here cleanliness is imperative. Any of the compound left in the engine or on the valves (or heaven forbid in the valve guides) will cause things to wear faster - not good.

Just lap them till you get a clean, unpitted surface - overdoing it will mess with the lift of the valves and reduce the flow cross-section - not a good thing if carried to excess.

I've done 2.25s, V8s and such and yes, you can get a great surace with a triple grind if you choose to send it out - but this works very nicely - have fun with it!
