Cylinder head and water in engine

Hi Can anyone tell me why! I have changed a cylinder head gasket on a petrol K series engine and two days later there is water in the oil again.
I fitted the new type of gasket which needs a shim that was supplied with the kit. Is this just bad luck or am I missing something?:doh:

did you flush the system out when you restarted it, it takes two or three flushes before all trace of oil gone, thinking about it the oil will always float in the expansion tank, so clean this out two or three times and see if it clears it up. if oil keeps coming then you still have a problem

Thanks for your suggestion but it turned out to be a piston liner so the seal must have deteriorated.

is the liner cracked or just lower than all the others, if it is lower then the block is scrap!!!

Often with wet liners, if you are not careful removing the head you can disturb them, also you should not turn and engine like this unless you have clamps on the block. Other than that them engines are total ****e.

Yep I have learnt the hard way! I rember that the 4th liner was just above the others when I took the head off. So it has now gone to a garage as a Landrover Mechanic that I have come across said that it will be no problem to fix. Will see what he finds.

Ask him about the possibility of top-hat linering it at the same time.

I doubt that, its a fairly common problem this, lifting the head off or turning the engine displaced the liner seal, it fell to one side and got stuck then the head got put back on and squished it so it needs a set of seals.

Sounds like the pistons are gona come out so you might want to put a set of rings in at the same time.

You need to slide the head about a bit to make sure it aint stuck to it before you lift it off and dont turn the engine either.

Gona have to make sure the block is flat and the head before you even think of putting it back on, some of the cars renault etc once overheated they were fooked and never held water again a new engine job.

This could be the start of a real expensive event that dunt get resolved so speak to the mechanic and make sure he knows where he is going and that you dont end up with a huge bill and a motor that still ****es water.

did you have the head skimmed before you fitted new gasket

When you fit the new MLS head gasket, you only fit the shim/extra layer if you have the head skimmed, the idea is that you keep the compression the same as when it was first manufactured.

Thanks all for ideas but the garage put 'K' seal in the system and ran the engine for many hours. He said that it was most likely that the seal had gone on the piston liner.
It has now worked for nearly 2 weeks and done over 400 miles including towing and is running well.
Great ideas from you all and many thanks it is good to know that I didnt do anything wrong just bad luck with the liner and the 'K' sealant works.

Either that or you've done the thread in on the oil rail, did you change that too?
