Hi all,

Can anyone tell me how to check the CV joint end float without a dial gauge? Need to add in the correct number of new shims.

Other than the brass bush binding if its too low, whats the problem with having too much end float?

Its for a 1991 200tdi defender 90

When I had my hubs apart just before Christmas I simply refitted everything as it had been before, and have covered another 6000 miles since without mishap. Not exactly precision engineering, but there you go. As there's a bit of movement on the splines anyway the CV joints will tend to self-centre if they need to move at all. Of course it is hard to tell if they're completely happy, as they're hidden away inside the swivel housing, but there's no obvious vibration or noise, either straight ahead or on full lock. Just make sure they rotate smoothly and there's no roughness or binding with the steering in different positions when you reassemble and it should be OK.
