I'm putting a custom exhaust on my 200tdi Defender 90.

It has a 300 turbo on so the down pipe is steel and follows the chassis next to the bellhousing. Then into a box then going over the prop to the off side and out in front of the rear wheel.

How would you fix it so as it hangs without breaking anything?

I was thinking of fixing it solid to the bell housing but then there are choices.

either fix the box solid to the transfer box then hang the rest on rubbers.

or

Hang the box and tail pipe on rubbers and just have the downpipe solid fixed to the bell housing.

i dont have the option of fitting a flexi piece to reduce the stress on the system, was hoping that the rubber hangers would suffice.

Any one done a custom system and how did you hang it ?

ta:)

on my v8 I'm halfway through. downpipes were solid bolted up tight and all rubber hangers.

Arrr yes, V8 pipes are pretty solid.

My problem I think ....is that the 300 downpipe is pretty flimsy if not braced to the bell housing or gearbox.
That then means that the system is fixed to the engine / transmission and moves with it.
Much the same as the V8 i spose.

Thing is that the tail pipe will rise and fall as the engine twists because it comes out the side :)

My 200 downpipe is fixed solid to the nearside of the engine block as std, then rubber mounts all the way back, seems to solid to me.
On my 88 tdi i made the complete exhaust system from scratch and used some of that posh flexi from e bay with the woven mesh over it just inside the wing, then used std series rubber hangers cut to suit, okay so far, 6mths
Pics bit poor but you get the idea

Nice job .

I see yours goes across at the back, does it exit on the off side?

Where did you get the piece of flexi and the bends if you dont mind my askin?

The exhaust in the pic is on my 88, they exit on the offside as std.
I got the flexi from e bay, i bought the shorter version, but would recommend the longer as i dont think the short one flexes enough
The bends i got my local exhaust place to bend up for me, i think i used 3 it total, from memory 2 1/4 pipe 3 90 deg bends with long tails were 45 quid, i think i only used one straight length, i did work it out and total cost was about 90 pounds excluding my time.
I would have bought one but as ive got a pto winch with all the shafting in the way steve parker didnt do one.

Found out that my 'special' exhaust box dont fit:doh:

When I fitted it the box was pointing down so I had to cut a chunk out of the pipe and reweld it so as it sits straight.

Lookin at it now I think I'll take it over the axle and then across to the offside to exit behind the rear wheel.:)

Need some rod now tom make some hangers with:rolleyes:
