After sorting out the wipers, hazards and indicators I've now a new problem. The battery light stayed on with the keys out of the ignition. I checked on the forum and decided to fit a new alternator as everything pointed to it being faulty ,this cured the fault but now when the ignition is turned on the battery light comes on and the engine is started the battery light stays on I've checked the belt and it's okay. Has anyone any ideas thanks.

You have either got a duff alternator (check the voltage with it running) of you may have put the thin wire on the wrong terminal on the back of the alternator (assuming you have the bolt on style terminals rather than the plug)

I had the first fault a couple of weeks back - faulty joint on the diode pack which I re soldered. Does the ignition light stay full on or flicker/dim when you rev the engine? As above put a voltmeter on the out put and check that it's sending out a charge.
