Cubby vs inverter

Dear all

Looking for a bit of advice on the best place to mount my inverter.

Did have a 90 so it sat nicely behind centre front seat bolted to the bulk head.

Now have a 110, thinking of fitting a cubby box, inverter could go on the back of it or inside, could even adapt it to mount under it.

What's the advice on wiring it in, via the crocodile clips or permanently to battery, via a fused link or a cut-off switch?

Where to mount depends on a few things I'd say. If youre wading, you want it quite high up, just in case you stall and flood the vehicle.

You also want to be able to get to the socket clearly with any type or shape of plug, so tucked away where you can't get to it probably won't be too useful (unless you don't use it very often so don't mind the odd messing about).

Also, think about what you want it for. If its just to charge a phone, then inside the cubby might be a good idea (although I would say its more efficient to change a phone via a cigar socket adapter). Anything bigger then you might not want the wires poking out of the cubby.

Also, any chance of spilling anything on it if it's tucked down somewhere.

As to how to wire it, you should follow the instructions of the actual inverter. Small ones can plug into a cigar lighter socket. So a fused circuit would be fine. Larger ones come with what looks like jump leads. A fused link wouldn't work, as it would need a huge fuse to not keep blowing.

I wouldn't use crocodile clips as a permanent solution if it's going to live in the landy. Either direct to the battery on proper battery ring terminals (as long as you are sure that when it's switched off it doesn't draw any current, otherwise a battery cutoff switch might be a good idea for piece of mind).

I have a TD5 90 that I've removed the rear bulkhead head so in a similar position to you. What I've done is mounted it inside the battery box under the passenger seat. If you have a compartment under one of your seats it might be a good place for it to keep it out of the way. Then I have wired a short extension lead that plugs into the inverter and terminates in a water resistant outdoor socket, which I've mounted behind the passenger set. The switch to turn the inverter on and off was removed, the wires extended and then the switch was mounted in the dash. Job done!

Wherever you put it make sure it's got adequate ventilation, they generate a fair amount of heat.

Mines wired through a fuse to my aux battery and mounted in the back as thats where I use it most when camping. On the move a dual lighter socket handles charging stuff.
