I’ve got a defender 90 1988.
I had problems selecting gears so started by changing slave and master cylinder.
Still had problems. So took the gearbox out and replaced clutch plate, pressure plate, thrust bearing, spigot bear and rear crank seal. All put back together now I’m having trouble selecting reverse. I read a few posts and realised the reverse switch hadn’t come loose but was supposed to be like it was. So I can now get reverse but it doesn’t slide in. it grinds as though the clutch isn’t disengaging properly it works ok in forward gears any advice would be appreciated.

I’ve just taken the reverse light switch completely out and it still does the same.

Try pausing in neutral after a forward gear, revs settled, then select reverse. Mine crunches a bit if I don't do that. Idle speed too high? You can adjust the rod on the master so you only have minimal play which helps, as long as there is 1mm of free play before the rod moves that's fine. Pedal stop adjusted out too far not giving enough "throw" ?

Old trick is to engage any forward gear this stops the box internals, then with foot still on clutch engage reverse.

You have a 1988 Land Rover Ninety. They got called Defenders later.

Have you checked clutch master cylinder pushrod adjustment, and slave pushrod adjustment, if any.

If that is OK, you may have bent the clutch driven plate when you put the gearbox back on.
May wear in in time, or you may have to do it again.

Detailed and easily searchable. Thank you for sharing this.
