Hello folks. I wonder if someone on here could please tell me the location of the Crankshaft Position Sensor?

I have a 2001 USA-spec Land Rover 4.6 SE.

I was told that the CPS is located on the bellhousing at the rear of the engine, lower left side, but I'm darned if I can find the thing! On the other hand, I spotted a sensor on the front of the engine, right above the Crankshaft Pulley. Is this the Crank Position Sensor on this model engine? Or is that the camshaft position sensor? Seems that cam sensor would be up higher on the engine, near the cams?

And when I do find the part, is there any trick to switching it out?

thanks for any guidance/comments.

Dana

no mate the sensor at the front of the motor is the cam sensor , the cps is on the l/h side of the engine ( opposite side to starter ) and about maybe the same level as the starter , you should be able to see / feel the wire running down to it .

Hey, I just wanted to post a quick note of thanks to the folks who responded to me. Yes, this was the problem, and I was able to change out the part without too much trouble.

I couldn't see the plug (Catalytic converter and exhaust manifold in the way) and trying by feel to disconnect it from underneath the vehicle didn't work too well, so I ended up removing the left wheel and plastic inner-fender splash shield. That afforded visible access to the plug so that I could then disconnect the old and plug in the new.

Thanks again for the help, guys.

Thanks for the update Dana-that's what the forums all about, posting the problem and then posting the fix which will help others with the same problem and describing the snags and how you got over them.
