Crank damper pulley issue

Was trying the past hour to take the pulley off, to no avail.

secured the crank damper pulley holding tool to the pulley, turned the 27mm nut with a breaker bar & extension. The crank shaft is turning now with the pulley secured.

Am thinking:
a) the crank shaft locking teeth had been sheared
b) the rubber damper on the pulley had sheared

Is there any other way of 'locking' down the crank shaft, so that I can take the nut off to inspect the damages done?

Its a 300tdi with autobox, so there is no way I could put it in gear to lock down the crank shaft.

Dropping the gearbox to get to the flywheel and lock it down is the last resort, but not keen to go that far.

Any idea?

Jam the breaker bar against the chassis, then flick the starter, don't forget to pull the wire off the stop solenoid first .

thanks Dent...tried the starter trick...didn't work....

As its an auto, cant use the 'in gear' method as well..

also being an auto, the flywheel is a little different, where it doesn't have a slot on the flywheel where I can stick a bolt / screwdriver in...

found an access at the front of the bell housing where I could take out one of the bolt securing the flywheel to the torque converter....and put a longer bolt in to give leverage......will report back later if that is workable..
