Start it up and find out. Just after the engine has started undo the radiator cap to see if exhaust gasses are leaking into the cooling system. Check the water for oil contamination and the oil for water contamination. Also visually check the block.

them engines are designed to push the core plugs out first before any damge to the head or block when the water chambers freeze.water exspands when frozen thats why they call them exspansion plugs or core plugs

a mate had a 2a that had a split (about 2" from a core ) he did manage to get a guy to tig weld it for him
well impressive

Core plugs are used to seal the holes that hold the casting core which forms the water cooling jacket during the engine blocks manufacture.

They may be forced out if the cooling system water freezes if your lucky but don't rely on them, their primary purpose is to seal the hole require to hold the casting core in place.
