As the title suggests, suspect the TD5 head. Was "hunting" when driving along about a steady 30. Also noted using water. Thought, ok, head gasket. Have now changed head gasket and taken for a run. Not "hunting" any more but a bit rough on idle. Checked water only to find lots of oil floating on surface. Now very depressed. Any easy answers out there or would you confirm my worst fears?

Is this a 12P or a 15P engine?

It isn’t usual for td5 to mix oil and water from cracked head, normally either pressurised cooling system from crack in exhaust port or fuel into oil from crack around injector.
What is common though is the oil cooler to rot and mix with the coolant. So maybe that

Just an update. Took head off again to check for crack, found a tiny swarf of metal on top of gasket near pot 5. This had stopped the head from seating properly and caused the migration of oil into coolant.
All fixed now! Runing smoothly... until the next time!
