Hi all,

Picked up a pretty reasonably priced 200Tdi, 91, 125k, the engine has been looked after well, runs very quiet (quieter than our 300tdi disco) starts on 1st turn, no oil leaks.. yes no oil leaks on engine

But the rest of the car not been looked after so well, just a bit of rust on bulkhead, and a bit on rear cross member, chassis is excellent, inside full of rubbish, straw, hay.. blah blah blah. But i bought the 90 as a bit of a project so tatty didnt matter.

But.. and there is always a but, gear/transfer box has a leak. Also when driving along transmission is fine, smoothish and quiet but if your over 50mph and lift off to coast there is a horrid rattly noise!! untill everything tightens up again and starts to slow down. Also if you knock it out of gear it rattles untill your under 50 - 40 ish. Doesn’t do it at all below 40 and in low range. Rear A frame ball joint seems ok, not sure if hand brake drum is catching, but if it was you would hear it all the time no matter what speed wouldn’t you ?

There is quite a bit of play in the props and the front one does make a rattle, (a lot more play than in our 98 disco 40k mile). I disconnected the front prop from transfer box and gave it some more wobbling backwards and forwards and the drivers side hub seems to be making the noise not the diff.

Firstly I think I’ll take off front prop shaft go for a quick drive see if its still there, then do same with rear. But if its still there is it worth stripping the hub to look at the CV joint ? or get the diffs out first to see if they excessively worn ? or do all the cheap things first, replace all bushes on radial arms etc...

cheers Dan

ok ive narrowed down a couple of things.

Went for a drive with rear prop only. noise is still there but not as bad.

But ive now taken both props off and had car running in gear while im underneath. Somewhere in the gear/transfer box there is a random clunk, doesnt matter what gear its in and what revs.

There is a LOT of play in transfer box. handbrake on with diff lock applied i can turn the box about a 1/8th of a turn which is about a inch before it stops.

transfer box buggered ?

also ive been offered complete front and rear axles with hubs brakes etc off a 95 disco v8 for £150. got to be a steal at that price you rekon ? only snag is i got to remove them myself. but should be a straight swap onto the 90 shouldnt it ?

any help would be appreciated.

i doubt that the transfere box is shot,
change the oils on the gear ans transfer box, itll give you some insight as to the condition inside
then get back to us
the usual for what you got is the uj's on the props, or if the vehical has been lifter the pinion angles change and cause all horrible sounds
danny

did change the oils last week. Gearbox oil looked pretty full, clean and still red (atf fluid) transfer box was half empty and pretty dirty. refilled with atf in gearbox and 80/90 in transfer box.

UJ's are not bad, tiny tiny tiny amount of play in them, no way they would make this kind of noise. ive had the car running in all gears with no props on (car stood still) output flanges spinning round and i can hear the random clunk rattle while lied underneath. could be a worn ouput shaft on gearbox ?

not tried running with no props on while its in low range or neutral yet, i'll do that tomorrow.

well went for a drive today with only front prop shaft. horrid rattle has now gone when i lift off, but gearbox feels looser than a hookers whatsit. i'll grease up the rear prop shaft put it on and do rear axle oil (already done front) change all bushes ive ordered. A frame b joint, a frame bushes, radial arm bushes etc. then go for a drive.

if u reverse it up then go forward its got to take up quite a bit of slack, noisy if ur rough with clutch and quiet if your gentle with clutch.
