Ive noticed, immediately on start up I get a plume of black smoke, goes away afer maybe 2 seconds. also if i rev it up and take my foot off the accelarator (whilst stationary, I get black smoke). Also has a slight haze whilst on full throttle and is running hot (Needle a couple of mm under the red) although im not really convinced my sender is reading it accurately as the heater output doesnt seem too different. It also seems to struggle a bit (I know its a 2.5 non turbo but the series is quite light so should be doing better than it is especially after having new rings, a head skim and new bearings.

Had new fuel filter, timing belt and injection pump all set up with the timing pins so is spot on. Could it be coked up injectors? I also cleaned the air filter through a couple of months ago but done a few runs since then. Also she seems to breathe pretty heavily too (but onlyout the rocker cover, not out the dipstick, its always had this issue), so much so that im considering fitting a second breather to the block like on 2.25s/

What do we think the smoking issue could be?

if youve had pump done it will be full as new pressure, injectors wont be id get them checked ,new nozzles fitted , if you just fit new rings and a quick glaze bust or hone it will not be like a rebore and a machine hone of 1 or 2 thou

Currently rebuilding my spare set of injectors to go in with new nozzles and upping the crack off pressure slightly from standard (Just as something to do if not anything else as Ive borrowed a tester from my supervisor in work and had spare new nozzles in a box upstairs in their packaging) so I'll stick them in and see if it makes a difference. Im assuming that the injectors could also be coked up limiting performance?

It was bored to +20 before I had it and bores were in good condition so did hone them with my granddad whos been doing engine work for donkeys years (Dont see him anymore unfortunately hence asking the questions on here)

i wouldnt up the pressure just stick with 135 bar ,check pattern and leakage etc prior stripping and again after obviously, it might need to run in , but you do need to hone some metal a reasonable looking cross hatch just on the surface isnt enough it will just polish off quickly

Noticed in the book there are special tools for cleaning of the carbon from the injector bits and pieces. I dont have these and i cant seem to find them, however i do have some very small nylon brushes for cleaning airbrushes and things as well as a set of nozzle cleaners in work. Will these do (obviously I'll flush the injector through before use to get rid of bits and pieces) or do i have to try and find the proper tools?

I thought if rings were letting oil past wouldnt you get a loss of compression and blue smoke? Compression is brilliant in this engine, havent done a test but it feels strong, its a struggle turning over by hand without taking the glow plugs out.

there are tools for such but from experience if you need them fit new nozzles ,the rest will clean with a paint brush, parafin and airline, i thought you said it was breathing heavish

Well if i take the hose off the filler cap and put my finger over the end it will pop out with pressure. It doesnt chuff though with it off, i just thought the pressure was too much so thought id mention it

Its been better since i had the head gasket done (that went between the bores and the pushrod hole so it blew all the oil out the top of the rocker driving home), that made one hell of a mess, once again i checked bores visually and they still had the cross hatch pattern from when i honed it a while ago

Ah okay thanks, so nothing to be woriied about then :) It gets wisps out of it but thats just the hot oil in the rocker cover i think (checked it after the engine had been given a long run)

No, thats put me more at ease thanks. Thanks for the advice :) Will get on with the injectors then and see if theres much improvement
believe me dont bother with injector tools, fit nozzles if needed, when we did loads of injectors we found cleaned and lapped nozzles didnt last long

Okay thanks :) Will get the tester set up on the bench and see how we go. At least using a spare set means i can keep the landy on the road in the meantime.
