Could this be clutch or gearbox problem?

Evening Gents,

Strange thing happened this afternoon whilst pottering about in my 90, (1989 19J), shes running fine with a bit of blue smoke on start for a minute or two then everything runs smooth and smokeless/odourless. Anyways, pulled out on te round-a-bout in first and a complete loss of power and a clanging (like something metal being thrown around the engine bay) sound came from under the bonnet for a good couple of seconds (sounded like from the turbo area) until I took her out of gear and back into first and then pulled off then everything fine again.....cant spot out under bonnet looking dodgy. She does now and then seem to hold revs after changing from first - just for a second...and thats very occasional.

Any ideas? Thought it may be clutch not engaging/starting to slip and the sound just bounced around engine bay??

Thoughts appreciated for this weekends investigation to begin......

loss of power or loss of drive??? you say power but then allude to clutch?

Could it be your handbrake binding? When mine did this it felt like the whole vehicle was shuddering. Cleaned up the expander and it was fine...

Hi again,

Further to my last post - i was in my works car park with a fellow landy employee who told me that my gearbox noise was not apparently normal! Since i bought her three years ago there has always been a "clicking" "clunking" noise from the gears which disappears when i push the clutch in - i thought being only a 200 owner previous (when i was a tree surgeon) this was just an old car and somewhat normal......i am beginning to think im wrong. Will "do" oil levels in gears and trans this weekend me thinks. Any other thoughts appreciated.

Same thing happened yesterday. Not thinking as before...revs went high and after 5 seconds (which felt like a lot longer when i was contemplating switch off in the middle of a round a bout - again) ideas please if someone would be so kind? Almost like throttle was sticking on but def noise from turbo area.
