After some very long head scratching and periods of dispare, I have finally found out what was wrong with the car causing it to cough and splutter, backfire and would not rev up above 2000rpm when pushed.
Fuel pressure regulator was faulty, I measured 30PSI on tick over and reduces to 26-28 PSI when revved up. Just a little under Rave figures.
Previous to this I had changed the MAF and engine coolant temp sensor. made no difference. No fault codes recorded either all clear.
The new pressure readings on tick over are now 34psi, raises to 40psi when revved and settles down back to 34psi.
I took the car out for its first run and perfect through out the rev range and gear changes.
Now in for the MOT.
