I have a judder on the clutch, which is getting worse, when pulling away in 1st gear and suspect it is the dual mass flywheel.

I am going to have to get the work done at local indy LR specialist.

Do I need to get the clutch replaced at same time?

How much should I expect to pay?

2004 TD5 with 105000 miles

The genuine flywheel is pretty expensive, up to £350 plus VAT, depending where you get it from, I've seen them as low as £180.

Clutch is about £110 with all parts, but that can be +- a fair bit as well.

I'd not assume the flywheel has gone south, it may be just that the clutch has oil on it or plain worn out.

The other thing that plays up is the clutch damper, worth checking that.

Hi there,

Very interested in this thread as I've had clutch judder twice now on first gear. When I first bought the car last September the clutch juddered for a few weeks until every day use made it go away.

The car had only done 600 miles in 6 months before I bought it. How much usage does your Disco get NielT?

Second time is when I laid it up just before Christmas until I fixed the slight front damage I caused by sliding on sheet ice. Probably only did 20 miles in 2 weeks.

Again the clutch has juddered for a couple of weeks until every day use has cured it.

I'm assuming that there is a slight leak of engine oil onto the clutch. Correct me if this is wrong. Does this cause a problem for the dual mass flywheel?

Mileage on my TD5 is about 74500 on an X plate.

Regards

My dual mass failed about a year ago - but the clutch felt the same , it was the vibration I noticed first . And I have changed DMF in a few cars and again it was noise/vibration rather than the clutch juddering that was a problem .
As peter says , the DMF may not be at fault - do you have any idea of what kind of mileage it has done ?
I know that in the case of the vehicles I dealt with the starter motors were usually covered in brown rusty looking dust - which had come from the failing DMF.
And I dont think an oil leak would affect the DMF .

There has been a vibration but it has only happened 6 or 8 times over the last 2 months. It is usually 1st thing in the morning, at the 1st couple of junctions and immediately after you put the clutch down and sounds like a whirring sound.

The car/clutch has done 105,000 miles.

I guess a trip to the local Landy man is due.

At that mileage its likely the DMF - have seen them fail at 50 K ; and 100 K would be considered good going by most . And as pointed out disc/pressure plate/release bearing and spigot bearing should be changed while box is out .
I also changed the rear crankshaft seal on mine .

Cost me just over £500 (overall bill £780 but had lots of things done at the same time), that included a new clutch (may as well replace that whilst you're in there)

I was quoted today £880 incl vat for new clutch and DMF(genuine LR) of which £310 was the DMF

Neil - where are you based? I'm sure my local independant dealer would give a better price..? I'm Edinburgh, and my local "indie" is Edinburgh. May be worth a call if you're not miles away... Land Rover Range Rover Edinburgh Specialists White's Auto Services

Incidentally, my Disco's done 162000 miles, and the DMF/clutch has only been replaced once - I wonder if the flywheels now are modded in some way - this one's lasted better than the original...

anyone suggested doing away with the silly DM thing and fitting a nice Rakeway fit and forget one ?

Flywheels, Clutch

Had wondered whether this was an option but I read somewhere that this change makes the clutch heavier and similar to another post my wife complains how difficult my car is to drive and I don't want to make it any worse.

Is the comment about making the clutch heavier true?

i can't see how it could be as there's no change to the actuating mechanism, I've fitted a couple but am not sure i'd notice any difference with me size 12s - there did appear to be a slight chatter on the second one that wasn't there before, but that might just have been my ears

talk to Rakeway if you have concerns, they are really helpful

read somewhere that reason for DMF was to prolong life of gearbox, anyway, the prices quoted seem cheap compared to mate of mine here, just had his replaced 78,000Klm. by independent Landi Shop and cost him AUS $2,300.00. he did get new pressure plate etc etc, and slave cylinder replaced and new rear crank seal as well while they were at it.
