Corroding checkerplate

Hi Folks

I fitted checkerplate to the 110 about 6 months ago and it is now looking rather tatty, I wasnt expecting it to corrod so quickly.
Does anyone know the best way to clean it and stop it happening again?

i cleaned mine up with some thinners and a scotch bright and powder coated it!

Chequer plate is fine on the body but don't ever fit it to the cross member as it reacts with the metal, oxidises super quick and rots the cross member in no time. Mine had it on when I bought it and was quite a good disguise. Ended up fitting a whole new 1/4 chassis. Haven't cleaned he rest, on a 1993 200tdi it looks better dull ... it matches the paint!

if youve got an electric drill get one of them wire brush attachments there only a couple of quid they fetch the chequer plate up like new just be carefull or scratching the paint i normally ues masking tape sounds a bit of work but its worth it

If you just fit plain alloy plate then it is going to tarnish/corrode especially with all the salt on the roads at this time of year, moreso if you have used steel fixings which will react with the alloy. The best stuff is the anodised plate fitted with alloy fixings and a gasket, that will last for years without any form of corrosion.

I pick up a landy mag the other day which had an artical on how to fit checkerplate and they use stainless steel fixings, working in the marine field we try to avoid using stainless fixings into alloy as the stainless causes the alloy to corroded, but sometimes its has to be done so using grease on the fixing helps to overcome the fixing becoming seized.
