Helping a friend connect a starter motor in a 1987 90 2.5 td (19j). The starter motor has fitted ok, the 'bunch' of wires/clip on wire have been fitted to the top section leaving a black cable from the chasis and the live from the battery. The question is where do these two fit? Neither of us are electrical whizkids and aren't too keen on experimenting with the cables in case the lot goes up in flames.

The reason I ask is on the old start unit there was a couple of long thin rods that attached through the outside of either side of the starter unit ending in a bracket with a bolt that held one of the cables. There is a live cable coming from the bottom section of the starter motor, bolted on to the upper part. Could the battery live be added here?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

If I remember yes the battery live goes on the stud with the other live from the solenoid. There should be another stud on the starter body which is for the earths. On mine there arte two connected to this, one to the chassis the other to the block.
