copper washers under the injectors

My 2.5 used to belch out a heck of a lot of white smoke, it was a bit like a thick mist when it was started up in the garage :D Advanced the pump timing a bit and now there is no smoke and it runs a lot smoother.

Might be worth giving it a go on yours?

I'm going to try advancing it today (no hangover this year) I'll just let the sun warm things up a bit before I venture out.

Managed to get out today and advance the timing by about 1mm let her warm up
an hey presto... no more white smoke, tick over a little faster and much smoother
Now lets see what I can do about the black smoke when under load.

The black smoke under load will in all probability never go away, as long as it is not excessive for MOT live with it. Now pump timing is sorted go for a few decent runs it may clean it up a bit.

If engine compression is good might be oil passing valve stem seals. But if bores are badly worn will be burning oil.

Compression is between 230 and 240 psi (16 and 18 bars) across the cylinders,
I used an old hollowed out injector to do the compression test, I thought at the time
that this doesn't seem a good way of doing it, later on I'll make up a piece to use the glow plugs hole and retest it, My oil filler cap is on the rocker box cover and when I take the cap off with the engine running I don't get any of the burnt oil smell or smoke coming out, smells quite healthy actually.

It sounds as though you might need to tune your pump if you are getting black smoke under load.

How much smoke is there, and does it go away when she levels out?

There's quite a lot of smoke under load, then on the over run nothing.
I found out that just a little movement of the injection pump does a lot.
before I could only use four gears as when I changed up to fifth she wouldn't pull at all, now on the flat she'll happily run in fifth gear, but smoking.
