Coolent leak

I have coolent leaking from the plastic T that joins the header tank to thermostat housing to top of rad pipes, can this be replaced with a standard T peice ? I ask as it looks like it may have a valve or something in it.

my plastic T, fell apart a few months ago causing head gasket failure and I don't know if it is just mine, but there is nothing inside that plastic part. I replaced mine with an 8mm brass Y piece and have been running without any problems
