Hi,

Can any one help.
This probabaly will sound a really stupid question but is the coolant in the resivoir ment to stay cold even after a long run. The tempreture gauge is reading ok ie not over heating, how ever a friend of mine has a 300tdi in his defender and the coolant is warm in the resivoir so i cant help thinking i may have a problem.
Could someone please advise if this is normal, if not how can i sort it out.

Many thanks chris walker.

hi ive got a 200 tdi i believe the cooling system is basically the same, mine is always cold also .ive done all the usual stuff ie flush, thermostate, bleeding out air etc.still the same.
finally i was in beadles sidcup buying some bits,i asked the shop assistant about this, who took me through to their workshop and intoduced me to one of their machanics who told me this was normal due to the large capacity of the water system some cars radiators stay cold during winter . hope this helps.ive had my tdi for a year and it hasnt given any probs due to this at all.
ps i went to beadles before i found this exelent site.pps my heater works and my temp runs just below half way and never moves even in traffic.

I would expect the "reservoir" to be warm after a long run . It is in fact an expansion tank and is connected to the cooling system in two ways . One is by an approx 20 mm diameter hose that is on a "T" from the bottom radiator hose and the other is an approx 10 mm diameter hose which is connected to an air bleed valve which is near the top of the timing cover and branches off to a pipe that bypasses the thermostat on the thermostat housing and the other branch goes to the top of the radiater ( drivers side ) . The amount of engine cooling can vary by how much the heater is switched on , whether the viscous fan is permantly locked up , thermostat operation , radiator efficiency . water pump circulation , oil cooler thermostat , etc Regards Jonathan

Mines the same temp sits just under half, althou my header tank does get warm after a run,but cooler than some cars that i've owned. Guess its just a simple case of getting to know your landy lol.
