My Discovery II year 2000 Petrol V8 has been experiencing a coolant leak. The coolant reservoir level dropped by an inch every 400 miles or in a week driving in town.

I have had it pressure tested and the garage said that the leak is from the component that I have ‘circled’ in green on the attached pictures. The component is in the location where the white arrow points on the full engine photo.

Please advice:
1) What this component is called
2) What is its function

Thank you.

I had the same problem a while back. The square bit under the throttle housing where the coolant runs through actually warps and the coolant leaves out or the two corners at the front. I called MJA landrover in Bromsgrove, they sorted me out with a replacement kit for about £11 if I remember right. It has the replacement square thingy a gasket and even screws, it also has been manufactured differently to the original one to give it more strength to prevent it happening again. It took me about 10 mins to change mine. Unbolt the throttle housings four screws, hold it high in the air so when the offending part is removed coolant does not go everywhere. take the pipes off. Unscrew the three screws holding on the offending part and replace with new. Simple as that! :)

That item is called the Throttle body preheater. The kit comes complete with screws and gasket. The part number is: MGM000010KG

Good luck!
