Hi guys,
just changed oil on my 2.25 petrol series 3 and decided to do the cooling system as im not sure on its history.

Flush system out, the heater control was jammed up solid with crud, heater blower rad was full of muck and radiator was a bit minging, flushed out fine with clean water.

Fitted a new temp sensor, overhauled heater control and fitted a new thermostat (74 degrees)

Thing is, I cleaned both mating faces on the stat, put my paper gasket on, then my thermostat (bottom lip of thermostat sat in groove in main body), I fitted a new oring to lid of thermostat housing and torqued up nicely.

I have no internal leaks but when I re-filled my rad I left the hose off the stat housing and as soon as rad filled water came up through the stat and overflowed housing spout!

surely the thermostat should be sealed when cold to stop water from the engine going back into the rad??

am I doing something wrong or is it a naff stat?

it has a jiggle pin it , most of the flow goes through bypass till thermostat opens, for warmer climes you fit a restrictor in bypass to force more coolant through thermostat and so rad

The hole is there to allow a certain amount of water to circulate whilst the engine is warming up.

If it were not there you would not have any circulation and the warm water would not be able to get to the stat and the engine would overheat!

temp sensitive bulb is on under side

James, Without the bypass hole yer bulb won't work!

You need a small amount of circulation to let the hot water get to the stat.
