Converting a P38 to tow a fifth wheel caravan

Import a Ford F150 while you're at it they can tow 6 ton i think
But can it in UK? max 3.5 ton for trailer if not it is HGV?
I think the way they work is they can be 4.2 ton say, 3.5 tons is on the axles of the trailer and the other 700kg is on the back of the pick up through the hitch

Also I’m sure the length/width of the van means you need a commercial to tow it.

Isn't the 38' rated at 6.7ton gross train weight? 2.25 +4.5 trailer??

3,500kg on the trailer, mainly because of the low range which allows you to tow that weight from a hill-start. I have to day I had to go up a 1 in 3 hill with a digger on the back and it definitely felt it - I could see the temperature needle climbing!
 
Lightweight artics is a big and contentious subject. There is not necessarily any need to go to 'Murrica' .... the 'Fifth Wheel Co.' in N. Wales will tell you where its at in UK terms. Older drivers may benefit from C1+E entitlement on their licence which can give a useful increase in train weight,........... trailers and vehicles built/adapted post 2012 require proper CE marking and approvals (expensive for one off's). A few years back quite a few local authorities commissioned various waste trucks and other variations for urban use (not with P38's it has to be said!) but it didn't catch on and some of those now serve as horse boxes and the like. There are companies in Holland and France who build specialist commercial trailers and of course the Fifth Wheel Co. who are caravan orientated. The big problem has always been understanding the letter of the law which in this country at least is generally poorly understood, and can lead to confusion if you get stopped. I think it is a shame, I had a sawmill which would have been much improved as an artic trailer and was a pig on twin central axles. Like most people I eventually concluded it was too much hassle and never took it any further, but there is lots out there if you google the subject.
The coolest idea for sure would be a P38 version of that VW, ....
