I have a 96 p38 with the 4.6 v8. I am unimpressed mainly because of the constant issues that I am continually trying to run down. Mainly electrical but most recently the check engine light came on and it's telling me gearbox fault. I'm about ready to just rip everything out and start over. How difficult is it to put a turbo diesel in one of these? Does the transmission bolt up to it? Any thing at this point will be helpfull. Thanks fellas! Cheers!

Easier and much cheaper to just buy a Diesel P38 I'd have thought.

Lots of things are different between the petrol and diesel versions. BECM, Engine ecu, fuel tank, gearbox, radiator, oil cooler, the list goes on.

M51 engine will bolt to the gearbox with the diesel bell housing. BECM can be changed to diesel with diagnostics. Auto box ECU is different on the 4.6, no idea if it would work correctly, not easy to change as the wiring and system is different.
Having said all that, it would make no difference to the electrical problems unless you gut the car and go for old technology.

i have got the ideal sinario for you, i have just taken out of my rrclassic a 3ltr turbo mazda/perkins engine and auto box both done under 68k, still together, you can do away with your ecu, and end all your probs

Where would the various ECUs and the BECM get their engine speed signals from to perform their various functions correctly? And what would they interact with if there is no engine ECU. Not quite as simple as it sounds.

There's a P38 Vogue near me, slowly rotting away as the owner tried to convert it to diesel & quickly realised what a complete headache it is.

All you need to do is note the many different wiring harnesses for petrol and diesel. It's not just the engine bay loom. Half the bloody car needs the looms changing. :D:D

Better to just fix the faults that you've got, buying another will probably have just as much faults ,and you'll be back to square one.post up what's wrong with it,folk on here will have had these faults before and know the fix, make sure you have a good battery as gearbox faults come up when low voltage aswell as loads of others.

Try and find an oil burner and have a test drive first.

I have owned both, the diesel being a manual, and they are quite different beasts.

Although I tend to take the mick out of our tractor owners, in all honesty mine was a good machine and I had it for over a year and travelled Europe with no problems apart from the passenger front door lock mechanism failed and the battery retired.

And if wifey hadn't written it off rather comprehensively, I would most likely still own it.

As has been said, maybe try to find a way to solve the problems on your V8.

Engine conversions can be a nightmare as Wammers has said.

Could be a world of pain.
