Disco 4 (LR4) Considering a D4

In a rare excursion from AG, I’d like to read why I shouldn’t buy a Disco 4.

I am considering such a move as I need to re-evaluate my vehicle requirements. My way of thinking is a D4 and a Mercedes Coupe.

So, what to look for, what to avoid, best trim level etc.

TBH I dont know much about the Disco range other than the bad rep for the engine in the TDV6, not sure if the petrol V6 is any better.
What sort of age were you considering and would you consider the L322 as it has a better engine range? (IMO)

Go as new as poss to get the 8 speed box is all I can really say, same goes for the L322.

There is a guide for the D3 floating around, alot of the advice tips is probably still relevant for the D4.

D4's are very good. Although I personally prefer the D3 styling wise. The lights on the D4 are a bit chavy and chintzy in their blingness.

But overall there is very little on the market that can do what the D4 can. For me the biggest issue is the engine. While there are plenty that have been fine and have covered huge mileages. There does seem to be an ever increasing count of snapped crankshafts.... As long as you go in eyes open on this point, I don't think you should be disappointed.

Trim wise. The higher the spec the better is normally true for most cars, the D4 included. Worth reading up on the differing trim specs.

If you don't need the 7 seat capability or boxy interior shape, obvious alternatives would be the Range Rover Sport L320, as they are built on the same platform and technology. But can be had with the far superior 3.6 TDV8 or a petrol V8. Or the L322 Range Rover which include those engines and the brilliant 4.4 TDV8.

Don't get me wrong, the TDV6 is actually a very good engine in all other respects. But you just can't tell if one will snap its crank or not in advance. And if it does, it is new engine time. Which won't be the cheapest of things to do.

Petrol V6 was N America only I think. Not sure where the op is. The V6 isn't a bad engine, it is the last evolution of the Cologne V6 and makes 210hp (could easily make more). I thought they were only offered in markets where the TDV6 was not available and never sold alongside. I imagine the V6 goes well enough, it has more peak power than the 2.7 TDV6 found in the D3 and first year D4's. But being petrol it probably lacks the low and mid range grunt of the diesels. So you'll have to drive it harder to get it to perform and mpg will be significantly lower.

The V8 should be the 4.4 litre AJV8 in n/a guise with 295hp and more torque than the V6. But these also weren't available in the UK and can only be bought as JDM imports.

The D4 was only a thought. I do like the full-fat RR, not really considered the RRS. Whatever it is, has to be ULEZ compliant. My current Mercedes isn’t.
Lots to think about…
 
L322 4.4TDV8 would be a better bet, prices are about the same but the interior quality/ambiance along with performance is on an entirely different level.

Been looking and I see what you mean… then the TDV8 changed to a TDV6 around 2014… less clunky interior and the start of the ‘rounded’ look.
 
They went "rounded" in 2012 (fink) when the model changed to the L405 The TDV8 became the SDV8, it is essentially the same power train as the L322 TDV8.
As you want ULEZ compliant think you will need to go for something from 2016 for Diesel. Or the petrol version from earlier year is ok.
