Connect Iphone to play music via the stereo?

I am not having any success in connecting my iphone series 8 to the Harmon Kardon stereo system in order to play music in my 2011 L322 Vogue. The phone connects via Bluetooth ok but will only give me phone function. The USB port will charge the phone but not do anything else. Thought I had cracked it with the auxiliary socket connection, but after a minute or so the music stops and I get a device unsupported message. Somebody out there must have cracked this problem. Be very grateful for the answers.
