I am confused, we have 3 landrover's a 1981 109, a 1976 88" and an old series 2 for parts (chassis is literally in several pieces, lol)

anyway the 109 has 11" drums and a single brake wheel cylinder for each wheel.

the 1976 88" has 10" drums, and a single wheel cyl per wheel

the series 2 parts vehicle has 11" drums, and MUCH wider brake pads (approx 50% wider than the 109

this is obviously NOT standard.

it also has what I believe is known as twin leading shoes. so two wheel cylinder's and both shoes are leading.

so my questions are, why does our long wheel base series 3 has narrower brake pads than the series 2? and should it actually have the wider ones?

are the wider ones better for braking like I think they are?

also would it be a good idea to put the twin leading shoes and 11" drums on my series 3 swb? rather than its standard 10" drums

:eek::doh:

just checked and the lwb has twin leading shoes on the front as well. not single ones.

so basically to sum it up, the series 2 obviously has lwb brakes on it, but why are the pads so much wider?

and should I chuck them on my series 3 swb and then gloat over the better braking?

Becarefull that you don't over rate the brakes
Yes the bigger drums and wiser shoes will give better stoping but what might happen is everytime you hit the brakes you may lock up all the wheels and start sliding
Was the s2 military or anything ? I got a late s2 ambulance and that has wide shoes but this is dues to the lwb and over size body
But your s3 is a swb so won't weigh as much so it won't need as much braking force to stop

All the V8's have bigger brakes.

so do you think that I should stick with the 10" drums?

also I have a set of the narrower shoes for 11" drums. surely I can just chuck them onto the 11" off the series 2

in other words put 11" drums, with the narrower shoes onto my s3 swb.

Im not sure if it was military, but I doubt it

V8 has bigger brakes because of the increased power
If the drums are for wide shoes then keep wide shos in there if you start putting the wrong shoe in the drum then the shoes me not sit correctly and they might shift and jam up
Unlike most brake shoes the landy didn't have a shoe retaining spring to hold them against the backing plate
