hi there, there's a question! You'll. Need to compare both models side by side to see if mods will be needed to fit the new one! Watch out for releasing the gas into the air... It's kinda frowned upon unless drained with the proper machine..good luck mate.

Cheers Mark. The Gas is no worry as it has all leaked out. Just need to know if any pipes are different and if the receiver drier is the same though I will replace it anyway. Also what mods need to be done to the oil cooler. Fingers crossed.

is there a local parts shop who could show you the two side by side? It could an expensive trial and error.. Any buddys with a different system on theirs maybe?
mine is a 1999. Ill see if I can get some pics on here for you to give you an idea maybe. Id of thought your main and intercooler rads would be similar to mine, so in thiery it should fit in the hole.. Depending on your fans?

Cheers Mark will appreciate the pics. I know the oil cooler is different due to it having brackets to support the smaller condenser but they are easily cut off. So long as the receiver drier ends up in the same position then all pipes should fit. Well..... wish me luck as I've just placed the order for the new older style condenser and a new receiver drier. Compared to the original condenser I am ££275 up so have that to play with to make it fit. If it works out will post pics and description of what I had to do so others can follow and hopefully save a fortune too. Kev.

damn it, I dont know if you can see, all the connection's are in the same area.. There is not a lot bloody room in there along with all the other gubbins along side. How you'll adjust and or bend the alloy pipes, god knows....

Thanks for the pics Mark. They will come in handy. I've checked and I've got plenty of paracetamol..... so I shall wait for a few weeks so my fingers don't freeze off and give it a go. Will let you know the result and costs saved.... hopefully!!!

Hi Mark sorry I took so long. Completed the job this morning so a complete rundown. If like me you own a 2001 p38 where in their wisdom LR replaced the original air condensor with a smaller one at 4 X the cost and virtually impossible to get hold off, here is how you convert your Range Rover to the old system.
New parts required are of course the old style condensor, a new aircon pipe that goes from the compressor to the condensor part no. AWR5057 and 4 x 10 mm bolts about 25mm long to secure the fan assembly to the condensor. The original has 4 studs. For this operation I removed slam panel- grill-bumper-plastic intercooler trunking and turbo pipes from turbo to intercooler. You do need to remove the intercooler securing bolts to allow "wiggle" room but you don't need to remove from the engine bay. Remove all the pipework from the intercooler and the pipe fixing at the compressor. ( that one is a Allen bolt and a real ####**#%%. ) Two bolts up top secure condensor to the intercooler and 2 x 8 mm bolts on the bottom hold on an aluminium drip tray. This can be discarded. You will see 2 L shaped brackets on the oil cooler base. You need to hack saw off the horizontal part of the brackets to allow room for the new larger condensor. The new condensor is a tight squeeze but fits on 2 horizontal lugs at the bottom and the 2 intercooler brackets at the top. The new pipe work is a slightly different shape to the old one.., it has a couple of bends but does fit. Only thing I need to find out is as the new intercooler is larger... almost twice the size...does the older style system take more refrigerant than the 2001 model. Off to Kwik fit thurs for a regas and hopefully no leaks. Note I also replaced the receiver dryer.

I would of thought the larger condenser would use more gas! Possibly the same as the older system if not very close to it. Next thing to do if it's possible would be to verify if the compressors' are the same? More homework!! Maybe the charge details can be found in rave?
