Hi, I own a Range Rover sport 56 reg, I’ve owned it for over 2 years, a couple months ago I purchased a brand new compressor as my current one was broke. Since I’ve replaced the compressor with the new one it’s been great, I’ve had no issues whatsoever with the suspension until… yesterday I took it to a tyre shop to get 4 new tyres put on and it was freezing while I was waiting so the guy told me to wait in the reception so I did, got the tyres put on and drove home everything seemed fine, I then went to go back out about an hour later and the suspension light came on, the compressor kept running for awhile and then it just stopped and now the compressor isn’t working at all, the back seems to be jacked up higher than the front, I have no idea what this means? I’ve tried googling it but all it comes up with is a weak compressor which surely can’t be the case with mine being new, Is it possible the tyre guy dropped my car or didn’t put it in access mode maybe? I can’t really point fingers at him as I wasn’t watching him carry out the work so he could be innocent for all I know, I just wondered if anyone else has had this issue before after having tyres replaced? I’ve also tried disconnecting the battery for 10 mins and re connecting it, the compressor still isn’t working, I tried taking the compressor off and re connecting it, still nothing. I’ve booked a guy out with a diagnostic tool but he can’t get to me until Friday I was just wondering if there’s anything else I should try in the meantime. Thanks for reading, sorry the post is so long!

I suspect that a front air spring may have failed after the wheels dangled while the tyres were changed. Need to get the codes read but a leak will will eventually cause a fault which will shut down the compressor.

Oh so does the compressor go into a safe mode? I never knew this, I just assumed the compressor should be trying to kick in even if there was a leak somewhere, thanks for replying

hiya

plus 1 with regards to codes being read

am also concerned just in case they jacked it up onto the bottom of the compressor and broken the bracket, fingers crossed that’s not the case

Personally before removing tyres it has to be set up before hand , when using a jack I’ve done the following , applied the handbrake , chocked the wheels , raised suspension into off road height , then removed the engine fuse F26;, this disables the suspension, then it can be jacked up, trouble is if it’s not done correctly as mentioned it can cause damage to the air struts

indeed the compressor will have a fail safe to protect itself as much as possible

ref codes there is a cheap reader u can get called an Autel AP200 , there just under £60 and will save u a fortune seeing many garages charge £100 plus just for diagnostics, plus u can program keys with it , here’s a link for u,

https://www.auteldiag.co.uk/products/autel-maxiap-ap200

u could always ask the tyre place did they jack it up straight away or did they do anything before hand, alas very difficulty to prove if they caused damage but plenty of us here that can assist

hope that also helps
ps, may I ask plse , what make/ size of tyres did u get fitted plse , thks

Also meant to add, never ever use the scissor jack that comes the landy as there death traps, best to invest in a bottle jack and some axle stands , looking on eBay look for a discovery 2 or Mercedes sprinter van bottle jack

if ur unsure plse feel free to ask and can find some links for u

Hi, thanks for this information, that diagnostic tool that you have added the link for, I’m just wondering would that tell me specifically what part of the suspension there’s a fault on? Ive had diagnostic tools before thats all that haven’t been very good in terms of being specific, if it is then I’ll definitely be ordering one, I don’t think they jacked it up from the compressor as I’ve got under and had a look at the compressor the housing and everything seems to be fine it doesn’t look like anything is damaged, it’s just if they’ve dropped it if they didn’t put it in access mode maybe? The tyres are 255/55/19, I got continentals put on, thanks for trying to help :)

Yeah I’ve bought a 3 tonne trolley Jack from Halfords but I need to invest in some stands definitely

ur so welcome

indeed that code reader will give u fault codes and live data , alas with all fault codes it won’t always tell u 100% in what direction to go in, as these vehicles have a lot of electronics but without a code reader ur soon be tearing ur hair out, lol

Many of us own a code reader called a gap iid as they will go into the systems in great detail but they are around £450-500 , the Autel AP200 is a great one to keep in ur glove box for basic codes and live data , there worth it even for the key function seeing JLR will quote u over £250 where with this u can buy a key off eBay , get the blank cut and programmed using the Autel for around £60.00

maybe u bought an elm 327 as there indeed junk , the Autel ap200 are a simple basic reader , many of us also own one to keep in our vehicles as there good value for money

that’s good to hear as have heard in the past where some garages jacked it up on the compressor bracket, indeed does sound like they didn’t set the suspension up before jacking it up, as when I’ve gone to get tyres changed never had an issue as I’ve always asked them before hand do they know the jacking process

also found a video for u where someone has done a review on one

plse let us know how ur get on, oh and thks ref the tyres , ouch I bet that hurt , nice to hear decent tyres have been fitted

Great call getting a trolley jack , hope u didn’t mind me mentioning about the god awful scissor jack

Personally got my axle stands from SGS

https://www.sgs-engineering.com/jsr3-axle-stands

There is also a simple test u can do to check for leaks , raise the suspension to off road height , pull the engine bay fuse F26 and leave over night and see if it drops

at the end of the day fingers crossed nothing has been damaged

hope that helps and always a team effort as ur find the forum full of very kind and helpful people

The P38 bottle jack is good too:)

I’ve took your advice and ordered one of those diagnostic tools from Amazon, it’s supposed to arrive today so I’ll let you know what codes it comes back with :)

Thanks for linking the review, I’d never even heard of this diagnostic before you mentioned it, for the price it seems worth having it definitely

Might be worth checking all the ride height linkages are still connected, might be they were on their way out, and jacking the car up took them past their failure point, ie they were knackered and the tyres guys jacking the wheel finished them off.

Oh really, I’ll have to inspect them all, would that cause the compressor not to work though? Thanks

Tbh I have no idea, but if the ecu can see an obvious fault they just maybe.

hi mate

funny I saying that as when I done my front struts I accidentally left off one of the height sensors , started the engine then selected off road height and went straight to a hard lock with the red light , so indeed as u say maybe one of them had been stretched past it’s normal range if the suspension wasn’t set up before being jacked up and allowing the strut to hang it could also cause the issue

good call mate

ur so very welcome , personally have a discovery 3 which shares so much of the same platform as ur RRS , learnt about those Autel scanners a while back and is always nice being able to pass the info on

never forget my local JLR wanted £250 plus vat to scan mine and many other garages were quoting approx £100 plus vat so these scanners pay for themselves very quickly

when u first scan urs I expect a multitude of errors will come up as it will log a history file, best to email the list to urself or print it out, then clear everything , try ur suspension and then rescan it , that way ur only get the current faults and not the ones that have happened in the past

then a few suspension live data readings u should look at are
Height sensors
Pressure that ur compressor is producing , ur first get the main reading then when u hear the hiss after the engine is turned off is the residual pressure readings
Compressor motor temperature

included a chart for u of what they should be reading , please let us know how u get on
