colouring/dyeing a canvas tilt?

I've got my work 90 truck cab for all the dirty jobs and my 90 soft top is my Sunday afternoon run about so the children are the dirtiest things allowed in it. That's why I changed the top to one with windows as I have two disco jump seats in the back for them.

I was worried about stuff puncturing the plastic windows - are they quite tough? I just leave the rear rolled up when loaded

Yes they are quite tough. The plastic is quite thick but might scratch fairly easily if you are putting sharp branches in the back. The other reason I changed my hood is that I got the Land Rover painted in tomb raider grey and Exmoor had a nice dark grey hood on offer. There was about £30 off it at the time.

I cant see dying a waxed cotton canvas would work very well unless you removed the all traces of waterproofing first.
I would try making some rewaxing jollop up with beeswax, turpentine and a dye. Then boil the whole thing up in a tin bath for half an hour or so. The little pots of dying powder used by fly fishermen to dye feathers is awesome and comes in all manor of earthy colours. Just a case of ironing it with a blotting cloth after to remove excess wax and even the finish.

My tilt is getting a bit rough looking, so after a few repairs following a bit of greenlaning damage this weekend, I am going to try and see what this stuff does to change the colour to black from the very sun faded tan that it now is.

So, painted it this week , with the above linked spray paint.

Took 3 cans, which has covered the entire outside of the tilt, ( tilt has side and rear windows ) Will need one more for final touch up as I found after getting it into daylight that a few patches have not covered quite as well. It gives a finish that is a little patchy, but this may be due to the fabsill it was covered with last year.

It goes on like a paint rather than a dye, as it says on the tin, So it leaves the canvas feeling like it has been painted. Does not bleed through the canvas. Probably not something I would do to a good condition tilt, but as mine was getting a little worn around the edges it has improved the look of it.

Keep us updated on how hard wearing the finish is as I have a good original military canvas in the shed that was just starting to get that faded look. I had thought about dying it but got a new one from Exmoor instead.
