Im trying to build up my Landy defender collection.
What do you think are the most collectable?
I am after a series 1 but got think what else I could get.

You mean "Defender" not just Land Rover? If Defender then a very early One Ten or Ninety if you're after a future classic - finding a not rusty original will be fun..............................
If you mean any land rover Series 1 are always investment but Series 2 and 2a's are really coming up.
Why not go for the rare "crossover" model and track down a Stage 1?
Welcome by the way.

thank you for the welcome. I have been looking at alot of rot buckets, which I expected we have 4 in total, but still cant find the illusive series 1 pre 1950 Defender

Ah! so you're NOT after a Defender! There's been a lot of confusion recently as "Defender" is being applied to all Land Rovers - you're after a Series 1 Land Rover! Sounds like splitting hairs but the people you're likely to be dealing with are enthusiasts [rivet counters] - best to get your terminology right! They're getting rare and unless you're cashed up rust buckets are what you'll find - all re-buildable though and surefire investment.

Thanks for that! I get it so a defender isnt a defender when series 1 .. I am learning quickly. I would like to invest in 1 or 2, rather not a complete re built model though as would like to get the team to build it

four new (post 2000) defenders in the company , I came on here to learn more as the owner of company would like a series1, not trying to get anyones back up ,
I owny 2013 maroon 90 defender, being farmers we just thought it would be good to know more and this has sparked up my bosses interest he has always wanted to own a few, he is the money man so I thought I would ask what people who know what they are talking about would collect out of curiosity , to understand more

I've seen a few series and the odd series 1 when I've been knocking around North Norfolk. Usually sat in fields or by the little harbours. Could be worth a day out to look as alot are just sat there and an offer might be gratefully accepted. Mike

Have a bit of a search on Wikipedia or similar for a potted history but roughly speaking the name Defender wasn't used until the introduction of the 200tdi engine and to differentiate it from the Discovery.

All Series LR's ('48-'84) are becoming collectable. Series 1's have been for a fair while and increasingly S2/2a's. Series 3's are still the poor man's Landy but good examples are climbing in value despite the tacky plastic bits.

Originality inc engine counts for a lot with earlier examples and that's what I'd be looking for if I were looking for an investment/restoration.

Even round my way I know of at least two semi pristine S1's that belong to miserly non landy owners who will not sellers cos they think they're sitting on gold - bastards!

To be fair the confusion is understandable........................... with all the recent publicity the media have been referring to ALL Land Rovers as Defenders - no doubt at the insistence of JLR - which led to some very amusing coverage of 1950's "Defenders" - no way would JLR want global coverage stating the "Land Rover" had gone out of production....................... for those not in the know ALL traditional shape Land Rovers [Series 1 through to final Defender] will for ever be known as "Defenders" - Mr Wilkes will never stop spinning.........................

No such beast, they did not make Defenders until 1989
