Collapsible steering shaft too long?

Hi,

After some advice.

I have changed my bulkhead on my 1990 127 and all has been going well with no fitment or alignment issues. I have now gone to put the collapsible steering shaft back in and it appears 2 long so the collapsible bit is pushed a part by 10mm or so. Obviously this isn't right, might pose a safety risk and might introduce play into the steering. Picture below.

Does anyone else have expirence of this? I have replaced the UJ's which are the same dimensions as the last ones.

Question is would a QME500031 fit and offer more adjustment?

Thanks.

Slacken off the clamps on the U/J's and knock the collapsible section back together. There should be enough movement in the splined area to take up the gap.
If the gap in your collapsible joint is 10mm you only need to find 2.5mm at each splined section.

Thanks,

Already tried that. That gap is including the extra I can take up on the spline. That's what's confusing.

When I replaced the U/J on mine there was sufficient movement on the splines to remove the steering shaft without moving the upper column, although I suppose the cut-out for the bolt limits movement.
The only other suggestion is that the upper and lower U/J's are different part numbers, have you used two of the same type, i.e. two longer ones?

2 different part numbers. Short one at the steering box, longer one at the column. Came as a kit. Exactly the same dims as the old UJ's

It's a strange one.

Problem is all sorted now, the newer part QME500031(Allmakes brand) fitted easily and still has extra room for adjustment.

It looks like a nicer part too with less slack.

Thanks for the help
