Hi Good Afternoon,
I have a 1992 3.9 efi V8 RR Classic runs great with 91k on the clock when warm albeit very rich !
I have only had the car a few weeks changed the plugs disi cap rota arm leads oil/air/fuel filters etc and the diff oil front and rear...
I have a pair of problems i would like some advice on:
1/ fuel smell I have changed the filter and checked the lines are ok(wife says it goes unless it gets sorted !!!)
2/ when its been stood over night and is cold i need to turn it over about 3-4 times in order for it to fire and run. first few times it seems to cough slutter then knonk out !!!
3/ the plugs i removed were very black with carbon deposits which I understand is running rich (what can i do)..
Any help would be great
POINTS..... Heater and air con have been removed !!!
Thanks in Advance for any help I am new to RR

Regards
Scott

Hello Scott,

Probably the coolant sensor.
These are prone to the fuel temperature sensor failing.
When it finally dies it will be very difficult if not impossible to start with a strong smell of petrol, soaking wet plugs etc.

I am told that you can remove the lead to prove it, but when mine failed it would not start with is disconnected. In fact after replacement if you removed the lead it killed the engine completely.

Way back there is one of my old threads that shows all the problems I had leading up to the replacement of this part.

You will find it on the 3.5 about the centre line of the engine sitting near the front, there are two sensors and it's the second one in. (The difficult one to get to). When you replace it you may need a new copper washer.

Remember when you remove it coolant will spill out over your engine so remove some coolant first to get below the level of the sensor.
Take care to remove all the air when you top up as you will get overheating problems if you leave an air lock.

Good Luck
Fred

Thanks

I am however getting conflicting stories about the problem I have from the cold start.....
my intentions are to replace both the fuel and temp sensors along with the fuel pressure regulator providing the cost is not to high.
The engine is running very rich !!!!!
Having begun to study this engine now i have found that not only the aircon is missing but also the heater......
good job I dont need a heater in portugal .
I do really want this project to work as i love the old car and it sounds fantastic when its running !!
thanks again for the support if you think i am doingto much let me know before i get these bits sent next week
Best Regards

Check it is correct for your engine

Don't forget to check all hose for cracks and leaks and the stepper motor for correct operation.,

It was a long day yesterday

Good luck Fred

FRED,
Thanks for all your thoughts I am about to have a look at the stepper motor I have however just lifted the bonnet and it appears that there is fuel also around the base of the injectors............
could it be these are not fitted correctly and would it cause any further or related problems if these are not fitted/seated correctly ???
best regards
Scott

Could be injector "o" rings are perished. When engine hot, "o" rings will expand and reduce leakage. "O" rings are easy to change and shouldn't be too expensive.

Thanks Kev ill have to wait till 2morrow now to have a look at at its really raining heavy here tonight in portugal, Seems I may have a number of things that need sorting on the RR I hope it can all be sorted as I love the thing I guess i will have to depressurise the system and remove the ring etc to view each of the injectors??
Lets hope it solves it thanks again

Kev, Hi thanks again for all your help it looks like its only one injector !!
it seems to be leaking from the base where it enters the chamber....

Hi,
Can any body help with refitting of a fuel injector.
I have 2 types of seal 1 is bigger than the other !
Does anyone know the order BIG TOP LITTLE BOTTOM ETC ?
When i removed the leaking injector both seals where the same.
