clutch90 defender

driving home yesterday landy lost drive ,engine seems fine buring smell of a clutch.however clutch pedal feel fine,goes into gear ok but no drive than a really weird thing happend ,engine would not start when key turned until you moved the gear lever then the engine would fire up a treat !! very weird ,ant ideas?
its a 91 defender 90 tdi

Clutch friction plate fell apart and jammed flywheel/starter pinion?
Either way you are going to have to spilt the engine and box to find out whats gone wrong.
Have you looked at the flywheel drain hole to see if theres any evidence of clutch fibres and dust.

If you end up needing to split Gbox n Engine. To do clutch this might help.
was on my 300tdi but should help ya abit.
