I know that this subject has been evoked a few times, but my story is that I have had my Freelander for over ten years and driven over 100 000 kms on the same clutch, that I was happy with and always felt just right.

Then last month the main cylinder went, so I had the whole lot changed (she has done 180 000 on the original parts): cylinder, flywheel, and clutch for €1782 :-(

But soon as I drove her away, I felt unhappy about the clutch that is now really near to the floor; I went back and was told that the travel is not adjustable and that is where a new clutch bites... but I am not convinced and am still not feeling that it is in the right place.

Does anyone know if there is a specified correct distance where a new clutch (complete kit) should take up? Or is there something else that perhaps the garage has missed?

I did the same and have the same issue I blame the cheapo aftermarket master I bought
Other than that they haven't bled it properly.
They do bed in after a few hundred miles though so it might be worth waiting a few weeks before chasing it further.

Yes she is a Freelander 2 TD4 S

I have been driving every day for the last three weeks and it still doesn't feel right: drivable but not like before. Sounds daft, but I keep stalling when parking and gear change is now jerky: I feel like a 17 year old (I wish that I still was).

Can anyone tell me if there is a specified take up distance: mine about 2 or 3 cm from the floor, whereas before it was more like 5 or 6 cm, and much smoother.

I'd be asking the garage that did the work for evidence they used OEM parts for the repair. For 1780 euro they bloomin well should have.
The problem is either cheap parts or poorly bled master/slave.
