Hi, I am looking a getting a series 2 but this one I have seen the clutch is stuck on, any advise?? How hard is a clutch replacement on the petrol model. I have done one on a awd subaru before but not an old landy.

Not a bad job, assuming it's standard chassis so won't have bolt on gearbox crossmember, so floor panels and gearbox tunnel cover have to come out. But more than do-able. If you've rePlaced a clutch before, then you'll be fine for doing a series! Not a lover of them myself, but a Haynes manual will take you right through it and for these sort of jobs there perfect. Failing that, download the green bible of the Internet and just follow the recipe.

Hi mate, I have a Subaru too and I serious doubt a Series clutch would be a more difficult replacement! :)

However when I bought my 2A the clutch was stuck on, and my Dad did a little trick to free it up. When the engine was turned off he put the Landy in gear, then he started it up, in which it obviously stalled. But it freed the clutch and it works perfect now. No idea quite how it worked but it did :)

Stick it in gear and push clutch pedal down then start engine. Best to have all the brakes on as well.

So for the right price its worth buying then? What causes them to stick on? When i spoke to the bloke on the phone he said that the clutch was stuck on and i asked him do you mean when its out of gear it ticks over then when you but it in gear with the clutch down it still tries to drive and he said yes

Just phoned him again to describe what happens etc, he said you can not but it into gear with the engine running and the pedal down but you can select all the gears with the engine off. He thinks the master cylinder is not releasing the clutch plate from the fly wheel, so could this just be a nackered master cylinder??

when the slave went on mine it was the same as you describe, got it into third and managed to drive it short dist home as it turned over and pulled off! it could just be the cylinder, can you ask him to fill the reservoir and see if it goes down? might show if there is a leak?

Check if there's any fluid in it. When my series 3 stands for a while it needs topping up, a good few pumps on the pedal and she starts to work again.
I've no doubt it needs a proper looking at, but it's been working like this for about 10 years!

He has said he thinks its leaking form the master, but he is now 70 years old and cant do much. I have the chance to buy it at a good price, the engine runs and the window sliders need sorting but apart from the clutch being stuck on there is not alot else wrong with it apart from the normal things you would expect to see on an old landy, so i feel it would make a good restoration project

Go for it.

Series 2 should be the old bean can fluid reservoir, see if the centre bit needs topping up.

Clutch plates can get stuck to the flywheel with rust, which where the in gear start trick works.

Well I have won it, its a 1972 series 3 sorry, not a 2. I have a nice 240 mile round trip to collect it on the 19th of this month. That's the soonest we can get the van and trailer for.

likely to be clutch master cylinder or prosibly thrust bearing i replaced both on my truck and it now feels like a totally differant car well worth the oily hands!!!!
