Hi All, quick question, do you need the spring on the clutch pedal inside the cab? Its a td5 90. I have took it off because it keep catching and rubbing the body work above it, because of the angel its at. The clutch pedal as only dropped a mm or to.Hope that all makes sense. Thanks all:D

I have the U-shaped spring in mine and is very nice. I don't mind heavy clutches at all as used to driving old tractors but I even get a shock how heavy the clutch is on other Defenders and my dads Disco 2 when I jump into it at first after not driving them for a while.

Nice mod too if I can find a pressure plate with a stronger clamping force to stand upto more power.

There should be some sort of spring, there are two designs and both should work.

A nice mod if you find the pedal too heavy.

I just bought a new pedal assembly for my 1986 90 last year, £35 inc VAT for genuine assembly c/w springs etc.
Didn't need to replace the whole lot but I was carrying out a lot of other work and it meant I didn't have to refurbish the old pedal assembly. Clutch weight was never an issue but it is definately lighter with the later pedal.

I have taken the spring off and it feels a lot better:)...question is does it need to be there? I phoned my local Landie place and he had not heard of the modification and said 'if the spring was put on by landrover it should be left on' but didn't seen to know if it actually was a help or a hindrance!

I've just done the spring conversion to my 90 TD5 and I must say it feels much lighter than the long single spring. It took ages to fit as most of the fitting instructions on the web are wrong or over complicated. Just remove the old spring. Fit the bushes and then this is where it's wrong - 1st put the spring in the u-shaped bush then using pliers put the spring ends in the pivot bushes. You are not trying to compress the whole spring this way but only half of it's compression strength. If I was to do it again I'd expect it to take around 15mins.

Thanks for that. Where did you get the kit from and how much? Also I take it by that, you don't need to take the pedal all apart, is it a little as the long spring off then new one on? Wow aint I of little no-how! Got to start somewhere!!

It's real easy and there is some good info out but Landy Anorak did it the hard way by locating the spring ends first. Locate the spring in the u-bush first and it's a piece of **** and all do from the footwell.

I did mine at the weekend, all done from inside.

Make sure to check that the spring ends fit in the bushes before fitting them. I found one was ok but the other needed drilling out as the hole was too small.

A 19" length of wood wedged against the seat box to keep the pedal depressed helps when putting in the ends of the spring.

I’ve just brought a defender and the clutch spring needed replacing. I brought one form L.O.F clutches and it appears to be fitted according to their video however after about 1-2 inches of movement the spring slams the pedal down. As I say it looks correct fitted but if anyone has an idea it would be appreciated. Here is a photo of mine.
