Freelander 1 Clutch problems...

Good summer drizzly morning all

So, my clutch has always (2 years) had a very low biting point. Right now, I inhale and it bites. Okay, it's about 1.5cms from the floor.

New clutch & slave cylinder fitted will cost me £500 locally.

Is it worth trying anything else first? I really don't want to fork out any more cash on this ruddy car
I'm trading it in next year, is there a way to gauge how long it'll last? It's not slipping or anything.

Is it odd that the first half (when pressing down) of the clutch gives no resistance at all? Just the latter half closest to the floor. This has always been the case. I've had a car that needed a new clutch before but it didn't feel like that!

P.s. When I bought the car it'd done 100k, now I'm on 120k - no idea if this is the original clutch.

It sounds like it could have air in the system. Personally I would leave well alone, if its been like that for two years it could well stay that way till you trade it in. If you get someone to mess with it, then it could go wrong and you end up paying out.

Hi Popsi, What model is it ? - ps, it is not a summer drizzly morning at all, it is too damn hot... sweating me wotsits off.
Possibly an easy fix.

It may just need bleeding yes. However as Joe H has said its better to know the model and year as specific clutch types have different problems.

Hi Popsi, yes it does - they are a bit of a Bu££er to bleed !. A pressure bleeder is good - or find someone with one - doing it the 'normal way' is a bit of a hit and miss with these as the slave cylinder is inside the bell housing.
Tell the garage / (alleged) mechanic to use a pressure bleeder. - or preferably find a mechanic who is familiar with this type.
