Clutch problems

Hi All,
Had my clutch changed 18 months ago plus master Cyl and Slave Cyl plus two Clutch rods. Yesterday complete failiure to engage gear. The garage has just phoned to say master cyl has failed, and its out of warranty.
any suggestions on how to approach the garage. the job, 18 months ago cost me £900. thats expensive and I dont want a bill like that every 18 months

Try to find out what brand of master cyl was used and get a receipt. Even Sh!tpart has a 24-month warranty now.

Whatever happens, the master can be changed quite easily and won't cost anything like 900.

I think he said it was an OE part...what ever that means

OE or OEM ?
If it's OE then thats a genuine part and wouldn't expect it to fail after 18 months.
You would need to get the receipt off the garage and go to whoever supplied that part to see what kind of warranty they have on it.
As GF21 says, just replacing master cyl won't be too bad cost wise.

I am collecting the car this afternoon. I will ask for the master cyl receipt

If it's a Td4 then the OE master cyl is AP, I think.

I've been told by the garage that its the slave cyl that needs to be replaced and its going to take nearly 7 man hours to do. So, as far as I am concerned, its too much money and is now it is time to part with the car. To be fair, its done 112,000 miles and there are a few problems creeping in, like the sliding roof hasn't worked for two years, the solenoid on the drivers door doesnt work so I'm going to get rid of my Freelander.

You have to take the gearbox out on a manual to change it.. LOL !!

Nice one Land Rover... However LAND ROVER do say this part isn't a "serviceable component" keeping in mind you have need it doing sooner than an oil change I think its safe to say they buggered it up the first time. I would take it back to them and say I don't care about warranty or guarantee (if you have these on your side all the better). You have not done it to a suitable standard.

Who did this work ?

I'm not into confrontation. I think the car was getting to its sell by date anyway. The tax and insurance and the price of fuel were all getting too much so this 'mechanical' problem was the straw that broke the camels bank [ pun intended].

Good Call, sometimes its just worth getting rid.. How good a job would they do a second time anyway ? Sell it on and someone will do it themselves. Will you get another one ?

You need a new garage or some tools, not a new car!

No I don't think so. Get something thats petrol and less tax. Don't know what yet .

My days of crawling under car are numbered. I've fixed many a car but when you get to my stage of life a skinned knuckle and bits in your eye and crawling under cars isnt as much fun. I'll leave that to my sons and grandsons.
I think motor manufacturers don't want cars that are fixed by Joe public. I've stripped gearboxes and replaced most things on lots of cars but I can't be ar<><ed.
I'll get a car that I wont touch but leave it the routine maintainence of an annual service.Playing with cars for 55 years...I've served my due.

On principal I would take it back to garage ...... A slave cylinder should be expected to last more than 18 months. If the garage fitted it incorrectly or chose to use a cheap pattern part this is their fault

Even if you have decided to get rid.... Get the garage to sort this first then at least you will be able to get a reasonable return

Always a tricky one.
You'll lose a fair bit of money selling it with no clutch.
There's never any guarantee the new car you get is fault free

freelander gone....no regrets...get 'something' new.

Blimey 1 hour 9 mins that was a quick sale

i guess my time on this very friendly site has now come to an end.
loved the content will keep on trolling the site but without a freelander I dont think I have anything to contribute.
