When you say it was sticking was it sticking down?

If the clutch gave up there could be number of causes and a number of similar and vague signs as well as some clear indications of what it was.

If the clutch plate had simply worn out, you would have noticed a change in the bite point of the clutch and it slipping even when it was almost fully out, however this could also be a hydraulic problem...

If the release fork collapsed then you would probably have heard it and that would make the clutch feel very light - just the force of the clutch pedal spring would be felt.

If it was the release bearing you would probably have heard it eating itself up first.

If the clutch cover packed in then you may have no warning, it could be fine one minute and next thing you know you have no warning.

There are more but let’s start with the basics...

Hydraulic issues, check your fluid level, if it was leaking somewhere then your fluid level would have dropped.
