and when i say problems, i mean my clutch no longer works... just had to be towed back to my house.
was coming out of the train station after dropping my parents off, and the clutch pedal dropped right to the floor, the car juddered, jerked and then stalled.
when the RAC guy came, he told me my clutch fluid reservoir was empty, he filled it up again, it worked for about 30 seconds hen it was empty again...
am gonna try book it into a garage tomorrow, but what do you fine mech heads think? leak? master cylinder? i'm guessing it's gonna be expensive no matter what :-:)mil8:
 
Master cylinder is fairly easy to change. Recently changed mine - purchased an oem one from island4x4.
Did the RAC guy investigate where the leak was?
 
he couldn't tell where it was from, just that when he refilled it, it emptied again just as quickly...
and hmm, may need to look at a hire car for next week :p
 
If its the concentric slave the RAC man wouldn't be able to see it leak cos it's inside the bell housing! Td4s are concentric. 1.8 are external ones!
 
Master cylinder is a separate part on the bulkhead with the TD4. This is a separate part to the concentric slave.

I'm guessing if it was the master he would have seen the leak so unfortunately as Diesel Do said it'll be inside the bell housing so you may as well change the clutch as well :(
 
will keep you updated... it should be getting done on Monday providing it wasn't something else that caused the slave to fail... though i hadn't had any problems previously with the clutch, and the guy from the garage did say the plastic was very brittle.
and because i realized i've posted several threads but never any pictures... here's freddy the freelander waiting for the tow guy (minus his roofrack, it's being "worked on".... with an angle grinder :p )

Dont know how the garage think the plastic on the slave is brittle as the only way you can see the slave is with the gearbox out. We are talking about a TD4 and the slave and not the master.
 
well, this is what he said... being more of a tech head than a mech head i was just inclined to take what he said as the truth :p
if it's cheap, and i get it back in working order, who am i to complain... he coulda quite easily stung me for a new clutch :p
 
Good luck with it - like I said I'm interested because I have problems with my own clutch which I've been putting off fixing.

Just a word of warning when I first got my TD4 I let a tyre/service station try to change a fuel filter for me - took 2 hours and beat the sh*t out of it with a 3lb club hammer. 1 month later had to change the filter again and LP pump because of the damage they had caused.

As mentioned above sounds like they might have quoted to change the master cylinder.
If they are changing your slave cylinder I'd have a new clutch fitted at the same time.
 
The reason a lot of us are a bit sceptical about the price you have been quoted is that a slave is about £50 and the job is around 6 hours, so if you can get the job done for the price they have quoted then its a bargin. A slave for a 1.8 would be around that price as would a TD4 master.
 
well, i spoke to the garage today, seems they misunderstood a few things as when they first opened my bonnet, they saw all the clutch fluid the RAC guy had spilled on the engine and assumed my slave cylinder was external. when they started dismantling stuff they realised the slave was internal and hence i now have them fitting a new clutch, and while they're at it i asked them to sort the gearbox out too as my second gear synchro has been knacked since i bought the lemon.... i mean car :p
rough estimate from the garage was around the £1000 mark, plus i've got some play in my track rods so they're gonna sort that out to for my MOT at the end of the month....
if i didn't love my little money sink hole so much, i'd be scrapping it right now :p
