clutch prob

got a bit of clutch prob.
feels a bit spongy and unless foot is on the floor
very notchy going into 1st or second when stationry
seems ok when driving although still need to get your foot down
could it be just the Master cylinder . or is it more than likely the clutch its a 1.8 done 50,000 miles

Classic symptoms, master and slave cylinder assembly needed in my opinion but check that the slave cylinder mounting bracket is sound and secure first. Movement there could possibly give the same problem.

before replacing the hydraulics, make sure the release arm isn't seized, common fault on the 1.8. if the arm is ok then replace the hydraulcs. If the arm is seized then you'll need to take the gearbox out to free it off

I had the problem on my Freelander 1.8. But my problems only started after I did a long run on the motorway, then coming back into normal traffic, it would be a pig to even select 1st or 2nd gear. I looked it up on my service manual cd, and there was a service bulletin about the problem. I couldn't believe this, it was asking you to change the clutch pedal assembly (sub100240)

You were supposed to measure the difference in depth of the brake pedal to the clutch pedal, and if it was more than 20mm out, you were supposed to replace the clutch pedal assembly. I didn't know what else to try, it cost about £40, so I did it. Now it works perfectly... the freelander is a weird thing...

im no mechanic other than basic stuff so its off to Little garage round the corner. he didnt inspire me with his knowledge but he knows more than me
hes having a look and ringing before doin anything. if he doesnt fill me with
confidence ill have to take it to a Landy specialist. theres a private one at
Oswestry I think about 20miles away.

UPDATE

Well they arent sure, we can replace the clutch
that should sort it :doh:
didnt even bleed the hydolics to try to see if it
was that as they couldnt see how that could
be the problem :doh:

the question i have are all garage blokes
this stupid.

well looks like im off to see the
Landrover garage Friday £££££££££££
was hoping it was sorted
for weekend

well you were right ' Release arm '
££££££££££

well i guess untill they strip it down i have no idea of the bill

but they said 5-6 hrs plus parts and maybe a clutch depending
how much it warn

Becareful they don't bill you for a clutch you don't need.

Ive made it clear they only have x amount to work with
or ill be washing there cars and brushing there work shop
floor for a month
