Freelander 1.8 2000: I checked and it's not the usual problem (I think). I was driving the car up and down the yard to try to free a stuck brake drum. Didn't work and did it manually in the end with loads of oil.

Returned to car a month later and the clutch seems stuck ON. The pedal moves up and down but the gears never engage. Start the car and can change gears without even pressing the pedal but no gear engagement.

Car wheels not moving either so I can't tow it.

Guessing that I did some serious damage during my efforts to free the back brake drum.

It's a car I bought to fix and now it stuck in the middle of the yard. Still want to fix it up as it's very tidy and drove nicely when i bought it.

od one but it does sound like the clutch is stuck on I have known them to stick to the flywheel and you can usually get them of by put it into gear and keep your foot on the brake and have the hand brake on .

Yep, the pedal goes up and down with a feeling that fluid is fine. It's like the slave is 'stuck' in extended mode effectively keeping the clutch open. I'm reading the manual as I'm not overly familiar with clutches. Have a few Freelanders so will compare movements as i progress.

If the transmission broke, you would not be able to moved the gear stick between gears with the car running (and clutch peddle not even pressed). When you do this, there is NO reaction from the gears (similar to the clutch peddle being pressed continually)

There is a rod that goes from the slave cylinder through the gearbox and onto the release bearing. That will be siezed as it goes through the gearbox. You probably had enough pressure to push the clutch down but now enough to push it back and so the clutch is on. Lubricate and soak with wd40 and try to work it free

Sorry if that doesn't make much sence, I know what I am trying to say but my brain can't think of the words

Oh and your brakes might not be too good if you chuck a load of oil on them. Try hitting them with a hammer next time

My first thought was the spline in the gearbox for the n/s driveshaft. But if you can select gear with engine running and no grinding then......... Don't think it can be that.

Never come across that before.... Does the lever move with the pedal, you need an assistant and the bonnet open to check.

Beat me to it bud!

Wd40 and lots of moving backwards and forward, the only way to sort it properly is to take the gearbox off and take the rod out but you should be able to free it enough with some molegrips+hammers
