Clutch pedal problem

Hi there was reversing my freelander out this morning and the clutch pedal dropped to the floor but the car kept going only way to stop it was to switch off engine as it would not then come out of gear till engine was stopped do they have a clutch cable or are we looking at master cylinder? or slave cylider problems? The clutch recently has been gradually getting harder to select forward gears for a bit especially first, Hope someone may have some experience of this and give me some ideas of what it may be and cost of the repair. Its a 1998 2.0 Diesel with 110000 miles on it by the way. Thanks.

Sticking master cylinder. Often you can pull up the pedal with your hand and things return to normal at least for a while.

The clutch is hydraulic, new cylinders come as a sealed assembly and are fairly straightforward to fit.

Thanks for that you can pull the pedal back up but there is still no pressure against it and if you press it again it goes back to the floor. Is it best just to get the master and slave cylinder changed are they an easy job is there much labour involved? Many thanks.

Straightforward to fit if you are 'handy', it all clips/locks into place, no bleeding involved.

Had same problem a year or so back, on mine the "slave cylinder" bracket had corroded and allowed the plastic clip that holds the cylinder in to slip partially out but enough to negate the movement of the piston rod, luckily I was able to knock it out of gear and "free wheel" into a Land Rover dealer car park. They had one in stock for around £44so I changed it on the spot.
