After getting the bonnet open this is what we find It is/was over the whole engine bay with a touch of oil stains on the inner wings The oil leve is spot on but there is no e

Thanks for that so I can leave that for now. given the state under the bonnet could I use a pressure washer or is that a bad idea?
A pressure washer is fine, providing you avoid directly spraying electrical connections. All the engine bay electrical connections are designed as splash proof, but they aren't designed to seal against a direct jet from a pressure washer.

As you are probably aware after test driving this 53 Freelander I drove 50 miles home as we approached home the clutch pedal went to the floor. The master had not been opened recently. so I don,t think the person I bought it was aware. anyhow Had a chance to inspect the Master cylinder inside the car and the seal at the back is definitely sweating put a cotton bud round it to be sure and the tip was oily black so I may be "lucky" if thats the right word with a faulty master cylinder. I have not got a radio code so would i have to go to landrover for a new code? As I have not got the Gadget you put across the battery terms to save the code.

Phone LR Spares and give reg number. If original radio they have code. Some try to charge, but just phone another one !!

WELL stripping the old clutch master cylinder and pipework out was the easy bit 15 minutes then it took hours to refit the master cylinder then just as it located in the bulk head the rubber cap partially opened so it looks like I will have to bleed system.I have a pressure bleeder but I do not think it has a fitting as on this ie rubbercap I think all my caps are screw on any ideas where i may get acap??

Thanks Nodge The pedal was not pressed
The new system came through the post its a luk one there was evience of fluid in the bag around the cylinder in the box . tried the pedal did not stick to floor but no clutch operation fluid around outside of master cleaned off and found a piece of sticky tape over the top of the master now removed. next step will be to bleed system and see what happens. everything crossed that it does the job
