Hi Chaps,

As usual, I've broken my Defender TD5 and I need help to identify the fault please!

I took it swimming a few months back, and submerged the front end, including ECU! after the ECU was returned, I replaced the starter motor which had seized.

My problem though, is that the clutch doesn't seem to want to work! the pedal moves, but It won't go into any gears, then occasionally it'll go into first.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks,

bung in the bell housing wasnt in and now its full of crap?

you really must have been deep and for a while to soak the ECU? how long were you under for?

Quite a while...I got stuck and took a while getting out!!

yeah that will not have helped.

If given a bit of love and attention a TD5 can be waterproofed very effectively, if not, i t will hurt you when you soak it.

Water will have made its way up under the gearbox tunnel and got in to the drivers seat box though the grommets that bring the main ECU loom in. Then if its not sealed then it will have got into the ECU by runing down the cables and into the socket or through the seal on the ECU itself.

You also have a few relays in there that will not like being submerged as well.

That also means the gearbox and engine will have taken a dunking.

Do you have a snorkel and extended breathers on your axles? i hope so!!!

Check that you ave a bung in the gearbox bell housing. Cant remember if they come as standard on a td5 or not but if your going wading then you need to have one fitted.

If its there, take it out and see if any **** comes out. If its not there then i would say the gearbox is going to be full of whatever it is you drove into when getting stuck. :(
