Clutch master or slave cylinder seals

clutch decided to give up on a hill, 100 miles from home, at road works on a bank holiday - great! called doug lang (great guy) and he diagnosed slave or master seals prob. i could get it into gear with the engine off and then start it in gear ( it took off in 5th up a hill - what a machine - i did think i was in 3rd oops) had to abandon the landy at a garage - they fix trucks so i'm hopeful all will be well. what should i expect to pay for the seals, fitting etc. i'll be getting the bus down to pick it up and be at their mercy!

I bought a pair of branded (TRW/Delphi) master/slave cylinders from my local independent on Friday, which cost me about £60 (yes dearer than the same from Paddocks but convenient!).

Took me about three hours to swap both and bleed the system up this morning, including removal of all the trim/carpets etc. to get the clutch pedal box out.

Depends on your garage and their labour rates, plus what grade of parts they use. Don't fit Britpart ones unless you want to be doing it again in a couple of months/years.

Thanks for the reply. Its a truck garage that took pity on me so they're used to dealing with decent engines. Not as severe a price as i was imagining for parts, and 3 hours labour will do me fine. They were going to order a clutch kit for a defender but i've no idea what make. i'll ask when i'm there. Shanks's pony till friday.

The above stands if it's definitely a hydraulics problem. Usually obvious as the fluid will either pour out of the bellhousing drain hole (as long as the plug is removed...) if it's the slave (as mine was) or onto the clutch pedal if it's the master.

If there's no sign of fluid loss, and there's still in the reservoir, but the pedal's gone solid then it's more likely that the clutch release arm has broken. This is a gearbox out job, which would require a lot more than three hours labour!

Hopefully it's the former for you.

You have landed on your feet there I think. They will take apart your master or slave cylinder and replace a few seals, if they have the right kit for it. £100 tops if this is what they do thats mostly labour and £10 or so for the kit.

There was a small amount of fluid leaking but not a huge amount and it was stil yellow, not black, so it might need a new master cylinder? will call them after the bank holiday (why this week!) and see what the damage is. thanks for the info, v helpful:)
