Clutch / drive problem

To add to other problems I had to be recovered by breakdown last night...

Engine didnt let me down but i lost forward drive.

Its a RR 4.0 petrol 2001 Auto.

In reverse I do have drive but not forward. Well, I have a tiny little on the flat in low ratio only. Otherwise it just revs up and go nowhere.

When it stopped there was a short smell of burning like when you slip the clutch on a hill followed by loss of drive. Is this sufficient to assume it is clutch failure/wear especially as i do have some drive in reverse?

If so is the clutch plate easy to change and how long should i allow. Ive done numerous others on less complicated cars and my series 11. Nevder done an automatic before - is it any more complicated..

Yes - very. You don't have a clutch between the engine and box, you have a torque converter. Any clutches are in the auto box itself. It's likely that it'll need a full rebuild if these are gone. Is there oil in there?

Check the oil level in the gearbox.

if you've already had smoke out of it, it may be too late. you could try topping up the oil as data suggests but odds are against that being a proper fix. and if you want an idea of how complicated it would be to do yourself, have a look at this.
